This so-called “pride” month has been mostly grief and rage—at death, at silences, at disconnections. And still, two recent occasions of poetry—the latest exquisites and imogen xtian smith & alma valdez-garcia’s collaborative chapbook release at Unnamable—were such a balm in demonstrating a palpable courage and generosity. A gaggle of gays can gather around Brooklyn back gardens for two balmy nights to read poems and raise over $1k in direct aid for folks in Gaza with infinitely more conviction than most institutions.
